A revised and updated list of a feature the GAY, a New York City newspaper, ran in 1972. Originally by Alice Ford, "25 Ways To Shaft The Gay Movement" and then revamped by J.F. Guthrie, National News Editor for the Philadelphia Gay News. The new "25 Ways" appeared in the May 30June 12 Issue of GAY NEWS.

1. Make sure that the most dedicated people in your group do every bit of work. This ensures that they will burn out quickly, so that there'll be a high turnover.

2. Maintain that it is never possible for lesbians and gay men to work together. All men should adopt the word "dyke" as a pejorative expression. All worhen should denounce gay men as 'sexist."

3. Denounce all fundraising as a capitalist venture. Make sure that the movement does not have

the money to do its work

4. Make sure that the move-

ment is always so serious and so heavy that nobody ever has a Hood time. Especially denounce humor, social events and other non-political happenings. 5. Always fault groups for not Teeting an ideologically pure sance on such issues as racism and sexism. Spend all your group's time arguing these maters instead of working for lesran and gay rights.

6. Establish rules of procedure s complicated that no one is ever empowered to take any tion at all. Make it easy for a handful of disgruntled individuas to halt proceedings cometely.

7. If you are a person of means. ever give financial support. Cecide that you needn't give money, because others will.

8. Make commitments and don't follow through. When an individual makes a commitment, but asks for additional resources or other help, ignore them. 9. Make sure that no one else in the community knows what your group is doing. Duplicate as inuch work as possible. Avoid working with the lesbian and gay press as much as possible to reach the community, especially if you don't like their editorial ince on one or more issues. 10. Force any group or committee that is working at top efficiency to give new members their say immediately. It is important hashing old

methods and ideas which have been found to be ineffective. 11. Underplay lesbian and gay professionals working in the movement. Fail to support lesbian and gay businesses. After all, our rights are their fight too.

12. Alienate as many other lesbian and gay groups as possible. Publicly criticize them and sab-

otage their work. If possible. bring your complaints before a straight government body.

13. Disparage all religious faiths, especially those within our community. Make sure lesbians and gays must choose between their god and their sexuality.

14. In the media, identify the movement for lesbian and gay rights with every other radical movement for social change. This will ensure that the public knows we stand for everything they find abhorrent.

15. Isolate all lesbians and

gays who are not politically correct. Make sure that those who hold conservative rightwing views on other issues are not welcome in the movement. 16. Use the term "sexual preference" instead of "sexual c...tation." Prove that being lean or gay is only a matter of free will. so that others will believe is possible to make us heterosexuals.

.J

17. Always find fault with the media. Criticize every bit of coverage the movement gets. When invited on a talk show, denounce the host as a bigot, so that no lesbian or gay will ever be invited

back.

18. Make sure that the public knows that child molesting is one of the aims of the mover Demand that age of consent. be lowered to age 10.

19. Denounce all mili action such as demonstrations and marches as counterproductive. Never participate in mass support for lesbian and gay rights.

.e

20. Choose the worst public stereotypes to represent he movement in public. Make the ignorant, the indifferent and the irresponsible represent us before the public, especially the media.

21. Denounce all leaders of the movement as self seekers. Never allow any real leadership to emerge, especially on a nationa. level.

22. Make no demands of members. Do not require them to show up for meetings unless they feel like it. When the indifferent

do show up, always give them a free reign to criticize whatever the group has been doing in their

absence.

23. Manipulate people for your own ego satisfaction. Having done so, make sure they know they've been manipulated so the movement again. they won't ever want to work in

24. Never take any action

requested by any lesbian or gay group. Do not write letters to. members of Congress, stat islators and other elected leaders

in support of lesbian and gay rights. Especially refuse to give them support when they take a courageous action un your behalf.

25. Maintain that to impose an admission charge on an event is oppressive. Always make it optional for everyone, even the millionaires.

It was ratings time again recently here in Cleveland radio and after observing the latest trends in this market, one clear message from the folks at Arbitron prevails: demographics have changed to definitely reflecta younger market (12"). WMMS (101 FM) is the No. 1 radio station in the city on the North Coast (or "Pium City" if you prefer) for the Winter rating period, ending in February.

W MM S's top spot has slightly shaken the radio community a bit by replacing not only another station, but another format altogether. WQAL and WD OK had split the No. 1 rank for some tme now, but Arbitron, an independent research firm that compiles all of these ratings and trends, has managed to more closely monitor the younger listening market and come up with this trend of rock replacing "beautiful music" as this market's No. 1 format.

What the above share trends indicate are that for every average. quarterly hour, 10.5% of the listening audience is tuned to WMMS. Arbitron further breaks these trends down to reflect upon specific age groups (of which W MMS is also No. 1 in the 12+ demographic). male and female percentag shares, and various other demographics reflecting income and loca' n. All of this is compiled and averaged for an overall share of the ket trend. The Cleveland survey also includes Lake, Medina and Geauga counties and represents market trends from 6 am to midnight.

The WMMS jump in ratings is relatively clear and easy to understand-especially when you consider that the largest share of the audience is in the 18-34 age bracket, one obviously more tuned to rock than the easy listening format. It is not fair to make any comparison of rock to easy listening on a qualitative basis.

There are several other observations that can be made from the most recent ratings war:

Rock stations represent almost 20% of the listening audience. Easy listening represents over 21% (this includes Cleveland's fine arts station WCLV.)

Urban Contemporary is over 10% of the audience. Country is almost 10%

WMMS, strong share percentage-10.5%-has also swept air personalities Jeff Kinzbach and Ed 'Flash" Ferenc into the #1 personality

position.

You've Got To Catch 5-According to the May Nielson rating booksreleased in June the other local TV stations are going to have to chase 5-WEWS-TV 5-to topple them from the number one slot. WEWS registered a 35% share of your county-metro audience at 6:00 PM and 32% more significantly at the 11:00 PM news slot. Channel 8-WJKW is not far behind with 28% and 31% respectively.

Other Nielson notes of interest: The Morning Exchange, still number one in the AM with a 45% audience share... The Afternoon winner is clearly channel 8 from 4-5 with movies except that time when the viewers at home switch over to catch Mary.

Finally, look for some big surprise when the Spring Arbitron book comes out in July WMMS still in number one place, WZAKCleveland's newest urban contemporary station to move up the ladder. Can WABQ survive the change to gospel? Will Larry Morrow go quietly-his contract, up this month, has not been renewed? Where to nov: larry?

From THE MANFACTURE OF MADNESS, A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE INQUISITION AND THE MENTAL HEALTH MOVEMENT by Thomas S. Szasz, M.D. (published in 1970)

Fsychiatric preoccupation with the disease concept of homosex. uality conceals the fact that homosexuals are a group of medically stigmatized and socially persecuted individuals. The noise generated by their persecution and their anguished cries of protest are drowned out by the rhetoric of therapy-just as the rhetoric of salvation drowned out the noise generated by the persecution of heretics and their anguished cries of protest. It is heartless hypocrisy to pretend that physicians; psychiatrists, or "normal" laymen for that matter,
